Peggy Shelton (THS 1935) came late to teaching, rearing her family before returning to school for a degree in education. She taught at Topeka High from 1962 to 1983. She brought the world to her students through World Literature and as the AFS sponsor for foreign exchange students. Shelton also worked in the first English as a Second Language program.
Her first career was with the Menninger Clinic, where she earned the funds to get a degree from Washburn University. She established the education program for patients there. She met her first husband, occupational therapist Charles Shelton, at the clinic.
Her second degree from Washburn was in secondary education, and she also earned a master’s in education
