Description

Topeka High pens made from the wood of the 1931 Topeka High flagpole – a spar given to Topeka High from the U.S.S. Constitution ‘Old Ironsides’.

Created by Brown Jumper Millwork. Custom Designed Pens. Measures 5.07-inches in length. Includes a black velvet storage box and an artist signed authenticity statement.

While inspecting the Boston Naval Yard for the Navy Department, Santa Fe official Barton Phelps (THS 1901) uncovered from storage an 80-foot lower foreyard from the 1797 frigate U.S.S. Constitution (“Old Ironsides). Since the Constitution was undergoing a refitting, Phelps inquired if the spar could be obtained for Topeka’s new high school under construction. With his request granted, the spar was obtained in 1930 and Topeka High formally dedicated its unique flagpole on October 27, 1931.
